Davies has written a very solid commentary on 1 Kings aimed at the pastor or students.  While the commentary does not delve into much technical detail, the insights provided can lead the reader to further study.

Davies takes each chapter and subdivides it into bite-sized pieces.  After an introduction to the passage, Davies then provides a verse-by-verse commentary and closes each section with his thoughts on the application of the passage to the church.

Davies provides lots of references outside 1 Kings showing the total canon of Scripture as God’s revelation.

While Davies states in his introduction, “I have tried to keep comments, brief and to the point, not stating the obvious and not entering into too much technical detail…” (9) I would have appreciated a little more in-depth look at the original Hebrew.

Davies does a good job in opening up these passages of Scripture to his readers and shows Solomon as a “new Adam type.”  Additionally, he helps provide insight into the overarching theme of 1 Kings as it “wrestles with the question of how Judah can to this sorry state. (11)

If you are a serious student of scripture I would whole-heartedly recommend this commentary as a place to start your study as it provides numerous jumping-off point for further in-depth study.
